If you are an average patient, you probably think of your healthcare team as your primary care provider, maybe a couple specialists, nurses, therapists, and any other healthcare providers. That list though is missing the most important person on your team…. YOU! You are a vital role on your healthcare team!
That may sound crazy to you, but whether you like it or not you are a member of your healthcare team. As a member of your healthcare team you have the choice to either play a passive role or have an active role. No one wants to be a passive team member, so today I am going to share with you the top ways to be a contributing member of your healthcare team and how not to just sit on the bench.
1. ASK QUESTIONS!
This not only is the most important part of being an active member but it is also the easiest. If you don’t understand your condition, ask! If you have questions about medication, ask! If you have questions about the treatment plan, ask! Asking questions is a vital part of being a contributing member of your team.
2. Prepare for your appointments.
No one likes a team member who doesn’t put in the work. Before your appointments do your best to prepare. Sometimes preparing is simply showing up with your concern. Other times you might need to make a list of your symptoms, keep record of your vital signs, make a list of questions, and do a bit more work. The more info you give your doctor, the better they can help you.
3. Do your research!
Research your condition, research your meds, research specialists….. The more you are informed the better you can advocate for yourself and communicate with your team.
*One important note- DO NOT JUST GOOGLE YOUR SYMPTOMS/CONDITION IF YOU DO NOT HAVE EXPERIENCE RESEARCHING AND MAKING SURE SOURCES ARE TRUSTWORTHY! I highly recommend asking your doctor for some good resources if you aren’t sure where to start. The internet is full of misinformation and its easy to get on some crazy ideas even with good sources.
4. Communicate well!
Update your doctor, call insurance if an issue comes up, be on top of scheduling appointments. The team can’t win if you aren’t telling them key details. One of your biggest jobs is communicating what is going on well. This can be so tricky especially when you are sick, but it is so important!
5. Don’t be afraid to speak up.
Ultimately the decisions being made affect you and your life. If you aren’t comfortable with something, tell your team. If you are worried about the costs of tests/meds/treatments, tell them. If you feel terrible, tell them. Your healthcare team members aren’t mind readers, you have to speak up.
Playing an active role on your healthcare team helps to ensure you get the best care possible. You are a vital member of your healthcare team!
