We all know that finding a good doctor is important, but almost equally as important is the doctor’s office. While you might be willing to sacrifice a good office for an amazing doctor, the vast majority of the time the two things go hand in hand. A good doctor should have an office to match. The office/ office staff can either be your best advocate or your biggest source of frustration.

Here are the top things to pay attention to when choosing a doctor’s office.

1. Is it easy to schedule appointments?

If it is difficult or frustrating to schedule appointment you are less likely to do so. You want an office where scheduling appointments is painless.

2. Is the check in process smooth?

When you check in make sure to pay attention to key aspects of the process such as-

1.They have the information you gave them over the phone.

2.If there are issues with insurance, they help problem solve.

3.They keep your information private. With this one you might be thinking “well aren’t they legally required to under HIPPA?” The answer is yes, however that doesn’t mean all offices adhere greatly to it. If you give them physical papers pay attention to how they handle it, make sure they have you sign a notice of privacy, etc.

4. Are they helpful?

Do they answer your questions? Do they make the process pleasant?

3. Is the office clean?

This one is self-explanatory. You don’t want to go to a dirty doctor’s office.

4. Does the office communicate wait times well?

Delays are bound to happen at the doctor, so you want an office that communicates those delays well.

5. Is the office easy to get ahold of in urgent situations?

When more urgent medical situations arise, the last thing you want is to be struggling to get ahold of your doctor’s office. In large HMOs its often unlikely you’ll be able to get a direct line to the office, however there should at least be an easy way to get in touch with a nurse or someone who can better assist you.

6. Does the office make me feel welcome?

Going to the doctor isn’t typically a comfortable or enjoyable thing, that is why you want an office that is welcoming. A welcoming office helps make an uncomfortable situation a little more pleasant.

You want your doctor’s office to be a place that you don’t dread going to. These questions will help you to find a great doctor’s office. Feel free to leave any questions below.
